I was asked if I ever worked tobacco before and I said yes (I needed the job). The Professor said that all of us would be cutting and spudding by ourselves.
This made me nervous as I had no earthly idea what "spudding" was or how to cut and prepare this to leave in the field.
I soon got the hang of it after the rest of the farm crew got a big laugh at my expense.
Later on, putting the tobacco in the barn, was interesting as the barns are quite tall and high at the station. One of the guys said that if I wanted too, I could be at the bottom and hand it up. I immediately said "Yes" and before I knew it I realized that I had been duped yet again at the expense of my inexperience.
Working the tobacco later on that fall and winter was an experience I will not soon forget as the working area was called "The Hole" and I found it extremely hard to breath. I eventually got the hang of it and the methods one used to keep at leats some of the dust out of my lungs.
Thanks for the experience Professor!!
